第3回Biophysics and Physicobiology Editors' Choice Award

"Electrophysiological characteristics of IB4-negative TRPV1-expressing muscle afferent DRG neurons"
Yi-Wen Lin, Chih-Cheng Chen
BIOPHYSICS, Vol. 11, pp. 9-16 (2015)

In the present study, the authors showed that TRPV1-expressing neurons of dorsal root ganglia can be divided into two groups because of their distinguishable characteristics in various biophysical properties. These different biophysical properties are thought to annotate their different roles in chronic muscle pain. Thus, the present study comes into contact with the clarification of pain, and it is judged to be an outstanding research.

" Lever arm extension of myosin VI is unnecessary for the adjacent binding state"
Keigo Ikezaki, Tomotaka Komori, Yoshiyuki Arai, Toshio Yanagida
BIOPHYSICS, Vol. 11, pp. 47-53 (2015)

This paper aimed to determine how myosin VI moves by large, small forward steps and a backward step, and then takes adjacent binding state during movement on the actin filament. The authors made myosin VI/V chimera to replace the lever arm of myosin VI with IQ domains (stiff-arm) of myosin V to exclude the folding of lever arm extension. The chimera myosin construct showed the same stepping motion as myosin VI did. This observation supports the parallel lever arm model that the authors have proposed previously. The adjacent binding state is important for myosin VI to function as an anchor on the actin filament against a large external force. Their paper is on high level and the finding is worth receiving the Editor's Choice Award.

" Specific interactions between alkali metal cations and the KcsA channel studied using ATR-FTIR spectroscopy"
Yuji Furutani, Hirofumi Shimizu, Yusuke Asai, Shigetoshi Oiki, Hideki Kandori
Biophysics and Physicobiology, Vol. 12, pp. 37-45 (2015)

" Structures of the Troponin Core Domain Containing the Cardiomyopathy-Causing Mutants Studied by Small-Angle X-ray Scattering"
Tatsuhito Matsuo, Soichi Takeda, Toshiro Oda, Satoru Fujiwara
Biophysics and Physicobiology, Vol. 12, pp. 145-158 (2015)

The paper describes a very interesting and thorough study of the effect of mutations on the structure of the troponin (Tn) complex in solution by small-angle X-ray scattering with a new modeling approach. These studies are important, because they should provide insights into signal propagation from calcium binding to tropomyosin via the complex by examining the effects of cardiomyopathy-causing mutants.
