“Increase in cyclic AMP concentration in a cerebral giant interneuron mimics part of a memory trace for conditioned taste aversion of the pond snail”

【Editor's Summary】

Increase in cyclic AMP concentration leads a memory trace

Conditioned taste aversion (CTA) is classically conditioned in the pond snail and subsequently consolidated into long-term memory (LTM). We examined the involvement of a second messenger, cAMP, in the establishment of this CTA-LTM. We injected cAMP into a key neuron and monitored the potentials of one of the feeding motor neurons. The potentials of this feeding motor neuron were transiently enlarged. Thus, when the cAMP concentration is increased in the key neuron by taste aversion training, cAMP-induced changes may play a key role in the establishment of a memory trace of CTA.
