“A unified statistical model of protein multiple sequence alignment integrating direct coupling and insertions”

【Significance】
Statistical model of protein multiple sequence alignment.

Protein multiple sequence alignments (MSA's) reveal the influence of the structure and function on protein sequences during molecular evolution in terms of the pattern of residue substitution. To extract useful information from MSA's, I have derived a statistical model that can handle short- and long-range correlations as well as insertions based on the principle of maximum entropy. Analyses of this model suggest that sequence conservation cannot be fully explained without long-range effects.
