Polymer brush in articular cartilage lubrication: Nanoscale modelling and simulation

Full atom modelling and molecular dynamic simulations of ionic polymer systems are presented to investigate lubrication mechanism of articular cartilage, as an example of molecular simulation study in biomechanics. We use chondroitin 6-sulfate molecules grafted on resilient surface as the polymer brush and water with sodium ions as the synovial liquid. With this model, we carried out a series of molecular dynamics simulation and analyzed how polymer brush and synovial fluid affect the lubrication under constant shear. Polymers have large deformation and the flow of synovial fluid becomes deviate from the Coutette flow, leading to a drastic reduction of friction.
