“The C-terminal periplasmic domain of MotB is responsible for load-dependent control of the number of stators of the bacterial flagellar motor”

【Editor's Summary】

Load-dependent control mechanism of the number of stators of the bacterial flagellar motor

The bacterial flagellar motor controls the number of functional stators in the motor in response to changes in external load. In this manuscript, the authors investigated the effect of deletion of residues 72 to 100 in a stator protein MotB on the torque-speed relationship of the flagellar motor over a wide range of external load and showed that the C-terminal periplasmic domain of MotB acts as a load-sensitive structural switch to regulate the assembly and disassembly cycle of the stators in response to changes in load.
