Genetic mutations and epigenetic changes cooperate to accelerate phenotypic evolution

Conventional evolutionary theories could not explain well how complex phenotypes involving many genes have evolved in a plausible timescale. In this article, we demonstrate that the cooperation between genetic mutations and phenotypic plasticity promotes rapid accumulation of many individually minor, but collectively adaptive, genetic mutations, leading to phenotypic evolution. The “cooperative model” provides a logical foundation of phenotype-driven mechanisms of evolution. That is, an environmental change first induces a plastic phenotypic change which is subsequently becomes genetically fixed through the mechanism of cumulative selection.
