Liquid-theoretical analogy in protein sequence analysis

The direct-coupling analysis (DCA) of protein multiple-sequence alignment (MSA) has been proved to be a good predictor of physical contacts in protein structure. Here, We reformulate the DCA using an analogy from the integral equation theory of liquids. This approach intuitively illustrates that the apparent correlation between two sites in a MSA consists of an infinite series of direct correlations. Based on this result, We discuss the implications of the DCA for protein structure prediction.
